The Discipline in a nutshell

Biotechnology includes the application of biology and technology to the design of new plants, animals, and microorganisms with improved characteristics. The development of crop plants that are resistant to herbicides or insects, the production of human growth hormone and insulin by genetically engineered bacteria and the development of unique vaccines are all examples of successful biotechnology.

The B.Tech programme in Biotechnology at ITME is a four-year course in eight semesters incorporating all aspects of the subject along with study of emerging fields. The different sections within the Department include Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Database Management System & Computer Network, Plant Biotechnology and R-DNA Technology.

Students study and experiment on cell biology, microbiology and rDNA Technology and other unique subjects in super specialty technology laboratories.

Affiliation:

The B.Tech course in Biotechnology is approved by West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) and AICTE.

Student Prospects

Applications of Biotechnology cover a wide gamut of areas from agriculture to industry - food, pharmaceutical, chemical, bio-products, textiles, medicine, nutrition, environmental conservation, animal sciences etc. - making it one of the fastest growing fields today. Surveys indicate that there will be a continuing demand for qualified personnel in the Government as well as in the private sector and also in academia in colleges, universities and biotech research.
