Biotechnology includes the application of biology and technology to the design of new plants, animals, and microorganisms that have improved characteristics. The methodologies include the use of recombinant DNA for gene cloning and gene transfers

between organisms, culture of plant and animal cells and tissues, fusion of animal cells or plant protoplasts, andthe regeneration of whole from single cells. The development of plants crop plants that are resistant to herbicides or insects, the production of human growth hormone and insulin by genetically engineered bacteria and the development of unique vaccines are all examples of successfull biotechnology.
The course also incorporates the study of Bioinformatics, the supercomputer-aided biotechnology, that is emerging as a new opportunity for many enterprises.

Prospects
Surveys indicate there will be a continuing high deand for qualified personnel in plant & agriculture projects, food processing, pharmaceutical and veterinary industries, as well as, the life sciences departments in colleges and universities, biotech research in private and government research institutes. On the other hand, worldwide Bioinformatics and related research BPO market is expected to be worth 20 billion dollars for India.

 

 

 

Course Module

Year 1:
Basic concepts of Engineering Sciences.
Year 2:
Introducing Biotechnology Science - comprising basic scientific knowledge in the areas of Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biochemical Engineering.
Year 3:
Using nature to best advantage - Covering topics that provide a foundation in fundamentsl molecular genetics and genetic engineering. Attention is also paid in this year, various biotechnological applications in the areas of Agricultural Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology.
Year 4:
Exposure is given in Industrial application of Biotechnology by Dissertation and also regarding the social & legal issues involved with the subject. Research project facilities will be available to all students in following specialized areas of Biotechnology in the Dept. of Biotechnology, ITME.
